Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is set to receive an abundance of money in this year’s free agency, and Seattle will be hard-pressed to retain him for the 2020 season.
According to a report from Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, Clowney seeks a contract that will set the market for his position.
Simply put, he wants to be one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL, if not the highest-paid, above Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack. Clowney is now 27 years old and entering his prime, so he will likely receive the highest payday of his career, despite registering only three sacks with Seattle in 2019. The statistics do not tell the full story, as Clowney has won a sizable number of one-on-one matchups throughout the season.

With both Clowney and defensive tackle Jarran Reed hitting free agency, Seattle does not possess many skilled pass rushers on the roster. The Seahawks must bolster their defensive line in some way, but the team may pursue alternative options to Clowney if he demands too much money despite being projected to have upwards of $60 million in cap space.
Given that quarterback Russell Wilson is already the highest-paid player in the NFL and there are prospects that will not cost as much money, it is safe to say the Seahawks will consider their options regarding Jadeveon Clowney in free agency.
