Boston Celtics guard Tremont Waters on Thursday was named the 2019-20 NBA G League Rookie of the Year for his play this season with the Maine Red Claws.

Waters emerged as perhaps one of the top guards in the G League this season. He averaged 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 36 games with the Red Claws, finishing sixth in assists per game among all players and 14th in steals.

His award didn’t go unnoticed, either.

From Celtics general manager Danny Ainge to several of his teammates, Waters earned plenty of praise for his accomplishment. Memphis Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant even weighed in on social media, congratulating Waters on Twitter.

Waters and Morant didn’t cross paths this season since Waters was mostly in the G League but even from afar, Morant recognized Waters had been ballin’ this season.

Based on his play this season, many around the NBA believe Waters will eventually earn a standard contract and winning the G League Rookie of the Year certainly didn’t hurt his chances of that, either.
