The [autotag]Oklahoma Sooners[/autotag] head into the 2023 season in unfamiliar territory. It’s been nearly five years since there have been this many questions in the wide receiver room.
That year the Sooners proved a lot of people wrong as they saw the emergence of transfer [autotag]Marquis “Hollywood” Brown[/autotag] and true freshman [autotag]CeeDee Lamb[/autotag]. But that team was also led by arguably the greatest college quarterback of all time, [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag].
This year will be different. A new wide receiver coach takes the reigns, and they have a good quarterback under center but not to the caliber of Mayfield.
2022 was a year where the wide receivers had moments of inconsistency. There were some issues with drops, and there were times that they struggled to separate. That is something [autotag]Emmett Jones[/autotag] hopes to improve this season.
“That receiver room will receive a ton of pressure at practice from myself, Coach Lebby, and Coach Venables,” Jones said. “I tell them, if you can handle me, then you can handle anybody from this program because I’m down your back 24/7. It’s all motivation.”
It’s that kind of accountability that has fans excited to see what he can get out of his room. Jones also said he can’t wait to step on Owen Field for the first time on Oklahoma’s sideline on game day.
“It’ll be like a dream come true,” Jones said. “The spring game, I was just chilled. Anytime I come through the tunnel with the team, it’s just different. I’m an emotional guy, passionate guy, and it doesn’t take anything for my eyes to get watery thinking about certain moments. I come here to win. I didn’t come here to coattail ride OU’s tradition and history, I come to add to it.”
If his recruiting is a sign of how serious Jones is as a coach, the Sooners could have landed them a steal at the wide receiver position.
“I didn’t come here to waste days,” Jones said. “I came here to help Coach Venables win championships and help these kids get to where they want to go to.”
It’s clear Emmett Jones is a man on a mission.
