It Takes Two film in the works from Sonic the Hedgehog movie team

The creators of Sonic the Hedgehog want to create an It Takes Two movie.

It Takes Two is one of the best games of 2021. In fact, it took home the top accolade at The Game Awards in December. Now there’s a movie in the works.

The game puts you in the shoes of Cody and May, a bickering couple on the verge of divorce. Their daughter, upset about the situation, accidentally casts a magical spell on her parents, shrinking them down and forcing them to work together to navigate a world where toys and inanimate objects have come to life.

It Takes Two is a co-op game through and through. You can’t even play it as a solo player, since working together is important both mechanically and thematically. It will be interesting to see how this translates to the big screen.

The news that Hazelight Studios has teamed with dj2 Entertainment comes via Variety, who also have some comments from the two studios. According to the game’s creative director, Josef Fares, “the potential is huge for a great adaption to film or television.”

“dj2 is honored to partner with Josef, Oskar [Wolontis], and the incredible team at Hazelight Studios on the linear media adaptation of It Takes Two,” said dj2 CEO Dmitri M. Johnson. “Just like the rest of the gaming world, we fell head-over-heels in love with Cody, May, Rose, Dr. Hakim and the imaginative fantasy universe Hazelight have created, and can’t wait to bring these characters — and this world — to life on the big and small screen.”

No network or studio is currently tied to the project, but Variety’s sources say it’s in the middle of a bidding war. dj2, the studio behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, is also creating a Disco Elysium television show.
