Israel Mukuamu’s transitioning from corner to safety, CFB to NFL, potentially from fringe to Cowboys’ center stage

Being drafted late on Day 3 is not the uphill climb it normally is if you’re a safety prospect on Will McClay’s radar. Mukuamu’s up next. | From @CDPiglet

The Dallas Cowboys have attacked the safety position in the sixth round of their drafts on multiple occasions under the stewardship of personnel guru Will McClay. Just last year both starting safeties, Xavier Woods and Donovan Wilson were former Cowboys sixth-round picks. Israel Mukuamu was a cornerback at South Carolina, and while he did tell Jerry Jones on draft night they drafted the best corner available, that was not the plan the organization had in mind.

Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn had drafted CB prospects and transitioned them to safety before, and Mukuamu was next in that line. Quinn has a plan for the Cowboys secondary and it is to add size, and length as much as he can and nobody fits that like Mukuamu. He is 6-foot-4 and over 200 pounds with over 34 inch arms and a move to safety could help him develop because it keeps him more in zone coverages where he is much stronger then he was in man coverages in college.

The player profile countdown to the regular season continues with rookie safety, No. 38 Israel Mukuamu.
