Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn was once penciled in as a potential starter for the team in 2024. The former Patriots first-round pick earned starting left guard duties with the Dolphins in 2023, but a quad injury ended his year after seven games.
Wynn, 28, was re-signed in the offseason by Miami, but remains out of action nearly a full year removed from his 2023 injury.
“There were some lingering things that did come up that weren’t the quad based upon the quad injury, if that makes sense,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel explained Monday morning. “There’s residuals in the human body and stress in one area can lead to stress in another.”
“He’s in this building non-stop trying to get himself back on the field. For me, I’m just embracing no setbacks and hope to get him on the field. I don’t know when that is, I’m not going to venture to guess … but it’s been a very positive couple weeks for him, specifically, as we hope to get him back on the field.”
Wynn is eligible to make his return to the practice field at any point and could work with the team for up to 21 days without counting against the team’s 53-man roster limit. The Dolphins could move Wynn to the active roster at any point during that three-week time period.
On Monday, McDaniel said there were a couple of Dolphins players who could potentially return to practice this week, although he wasn’t ready to reveal who was in consideration. While he ruled out Bradley Chubb as a possibility, Wynn and wide receiver River Cracraft are among those currently eligible to return.
With Wynn out of action in training camp, fourth-year veteran Robert Jones earned the left guard job. However, he’s been a bit of a weak link on the Dolphins offense line. His 59.8 grade on Pro Football Focus ranks last among the team’s starting linemen, although it’s not much different than the 60.6 and 60.3 grades for right guard Liam Eichenberg and right tackle Austin Jackson, respectively.
As a whole, the Dolphins offensive line has been better than expected. It ranks 11th in ESPN’s pass block win rate metric and 16th in run block win rate.
