Isaiah Joe, Paul Reed discuss benefits of Sixers’ summer league games

Philadelphia 76ers second-year players Isaiah Joe and Paul Reed discuss the benefits of the summer league.

Philadelphia 76ers second-year players Isaiah Joe and Paul Reed were robbed of a summer league experience in 2020–as was the entire draft class–as the COVID-19 pandemic forced that to be canceled.

Now that they have the opportunity, as well as Tyrese Maxey for a couple of games, to participate in a summer league, the benefits are obvious. They can continue to work on their games and develop as younger players and they can also prove to be leaders for the rookies on the roster.

“It is very beneficial,” said Joe. “There are certain things that they want us to work on and showcase, but I think for players like me, P Reed, Tyrese, and Tuck (Rayjon Tucker), I think it’s also a great time to be leaders. Especially for the young guys coming in so that’s one thing that we’ve been trying to take upon ourselves as being that later on the team.”

Joe has continued to be one of the team’s leaders through three games as he has knocked down a couple of triples as well as being able to improve as a playmaker out on the floor. He also has continued to make strides on the defensive end as well which will help him continue to be a more complete player.

Then, there is Reed who has taken big steps forward as an energetic player who can help on either end of the floor. He has been terrific on the glass, he has been an active shot blocker, and he has even stepped out and knocked down some shots. The summer league has allowed him to do so.

“The benefits are great,” said Reed. “It’s great practice for us to get comfortable with how they want us to play during the season. For me, they want to be one of those guys that can get rebounds, roll, hit open shots, and this just gives me a good opportunity to practice that.”

As they head into their second seasons and they now expect to take on larger roles in Philadelphia, the two of them have used this opportunity to improve as players for the future.

“I think Paul nailed it head on,” Joe finished. “It’s a great opportunity to get better and get prepared for the season.”
