Update: Tua Tagovailoa is inactive Sunday vs. the Browns
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is doubtful for Week 17 due to a hip injury he suffered earlier this month. Tagovailoa was limited in two practices prior to a Week 16 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, but played through the injury in a 29-17 win.
Tagovailoa was limited in all three practices this week and initially ruled questionable to play against the Cleveland Browns before he was downgraded to doubtful Saturday.
Tua Tagovailoa injury update
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said Sunday morning that Tagovailoa is “not expected to play.” It is “unlikely that he’ll go,” per Rapoport.
According to CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson, Tagovailoa told her prior to the Dolphins’ Week 16 game that playing through the injury would be a challenge. The quarterback managed to play and finished with 215 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Earlier this week, Tagovailoa downplayed the significance of his injury.
“It’s good,” Tagovailoa said Thursday. “It’s just like anyone else on the team and anyone else around the league. You get banged up little bit towards the ending of the year so just got to take care of that.”
Dolphins QB depth chart
Tyler Huntley, who started three games earlier this season, is in line to start Sunday if Tagovailoa is officially ruled out. Miami went 1-2 in Huntley’s three games in the lineup and the quarterback completed 59.1 percent of his passes with one touchdown and one interception. The Dolphins also elevated third-year quarterback Skylar Thompson from the practice squad to make him available Sunday.
