Is Michigan DE Kwity Paye the perfect pick for the Raiders at No. 17?

In a recent interview, general manager Mike Mayock talked about the lack of playmakers on defense and Jon Gruden echoed those thoughts on another podcast with Chris Collinsworth on the Pro Football Focus Podcast.

Needless to say, the Raiders need to find some studs on defense and it seems likely that they will use the No. 17 pick in hopes to do so. But what player would be the best possible selection for the Raiders in the first round?

One option that makes a lot of sense for Las Vegas is Kwity Paye from Michigan. At 6’4, 270 pounds, Paye is a freak athlete who has the potential to be a star edge rusher. While his college production is less than ideal, his upside is incredible.

In a recent mock draft at CBS Sports, Josh Edwards gave the Raiders the former Wolverine star at No. 17. Here are his thoughts on the potential pairing.

“Las Vegas adds some pass rush opposite Maxx Crosby. Kwity Paye had a high-pressure rate this season and the Raiders could use it. Jon Gruden’s team ranked in the bottom five of sacks last season.”

In order for the Raiders to take the next step on defense in 2021, the pass rush has to improve. While Paye himself isn’t the solution, he would be a massive upgrade and would be a welcome addition to their defensive line.

A defensive end unit of Paye, Clelin Ferrell and Maxx Crosby would be a great start at rebuilding the defensive line. Consider Paye a very realistic option at No. 17 as he might just be the defensive playmaker Mayock and Gruden so desperately want.
