Florida quarterback Kyle Trask is having quite the season. He’d be on pace to outperform Joe Burrow’s absurd 2019 stat line in a full season and the redshirt senior’s development has earned him quite a bit of attention.
According to ESPN college football writer David M. Hale, the Gators quarterback is now the leader in the clubhouse for the Heisman Trophy after another big game against Vanderbilt.
Trask has 32 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. The only other FBS quarterback with even comparable numbers is BYU’s Zach Wilson, who has 26 passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns. But Wilson has had two more games than Trask to reach these numbers.
Meanwhile, Alabama‘s Mac Jones isn’t producing at the same rate as Trask, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence can’t get on the field, and Ohio State‘s Justin Fields threw three interceptions against Indiana on Saturday.
Given this, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that Trask finds himself in this position. Here’s what Hale said about him.
1. Florida QB Kyle Trask
His streak of six straight games to open the season with at least four TD passes came to an end against Vanderbilt, but Trask still tossed three scores and finished with 383 yards through the air. He’s the first Power 5 QB since Oregon State’s Sean Mannion in 2013 to throw at least three TDs in each of his first seven games.
The Gators should be heavy favorites in every game before the SEC Championship, and should Trask have a big game in that one, the trophy could very well be his.
