As the Indianapolis Colts look to address their several needs during the 2020 NFL draft, they will be looking for those who fit their mold on and off the field. Does defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw fit that profile?
There are many prospects that could fill the needs for the Colts this offseason, and Kinlaw appears to be one of the favorites to go to Indy. With a massive need at the defensive tackle position, Kinlaw would fill a huge void at the three-technique.
Pro Football Focus believes that Kinlaw is the perfect fit for the Colts at No. 13 overall.
Kinlaw has earned overall grades of 85.0 or higher on 500 or more defensive snaps each of the past two seasons for South Carolina. When you hear him talk at the combine about how he was limited in his pass-rushing moves and how he thinks he can take a big leap forward with better coaching in the NFL, it’s hard not to like his prospects. Kinlaw has the sort of size, length and burst you can’t teach. Paired with the production he’s put on tape, Kinlaw is a borderline top-10 prospect in the draft.
The Colts had a major problem with their interior defensive line. It was one of the reasons why the pass rush was so inconsistent. They rarely got any impact from the top of the pocket, which resulted in only 6.5 of the team’s 41 sacks coming from defensive tackles.
Kinlaw would fit perfectly into the Colts’ one-gap front, which would simply ask him to get upfield as quickly as possible.
The Colts have other needs. They should be heavily considering the future at the quarterback position and they desperately need to add top-end wide receiver talent. Both of which could be available at No. 13.
But if we listen to Chris Ballard talk about the three-technique the way he does, it’s a position that is highly in consideration for their first-round pick.
