Is Derrick White becoming a leader for the Boston Celtics?

According to Jaylen Brown, Derrick White is emerging as a leader within the Boston Celtics locker room.

The Boston Celtics have one of the deepest rosters in the NBA. The All-Star trio of Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Kristaps Porzingis are the primary names discussed as potential difference makers. While the addition of Jrue Holiday has also created a buzz, it’s the subtle growth in Derrick White‘s game that is currently raising the Celtics championship ceiling to new heights.

The veteran guard is a two-way force. He is arguably the best shot-blocking guard in the NBA, a reliable playmaker, and a high-level defensive presence. Now, according to Brown, White is emerging as a leader in the locker room.

“D White is coming into his own,” Brown told The Athletic’s Jared Weiss. “He’s stepping up as a leader. You hear it in his voice a little bit more. He’s getting us organized running that point, trying to figure out where to get guys the ball, trying to keep the flow and organization. And again, D White has took a lot of great steps.”

White’s performances to begin the season have been encouraging. His ability to fit in alongside his All-Star teammates and make an impact with his on and off-ball play has become an important part of the Celtics game plan. Jrue Holiday’s similar style of play has also allowed White to adopt a more aggressive approach to the game.

With how the Celtics have been constructed this season, they need multiple players willing to embrace a leadership role. Accountability within the locker room will be at a premium. White’s growth as a vocal part of the Celtics rotation will only help them improve and will be another welcomed addition to the roster.
