Irish fall to Louisville as pair of top-15 open series

The Irish fell but their superstar slugger stayed hot.

The 12th-ranked Notre Dame baseball team fell to No. 6 Louisville on Friday as the two squads opened their weekend series.

After taking a 1-0 first-inning lead, the Irish surrendered five-straight runs to the Cardinals and were stuck playing from behind the rest of the afternoon.

Niko Kavadas had a pair more of RBI for Notre Dame as he worked a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, and hit his tenth home run of the season, a solo shot in the eighth inning that brought the score to 5-4.

The home run was Kavadas’s 34th of his career, tying him for the sixth-most in Notre Dame history.

The Cardinals were able to score a pair more runs in the top of the ninth inning however and the Irish couldn’t mount a ninth-inning rally.

John Michael Bertrand takes the mound for Notre Dame on Saturday as the Irish look to even up the series against one of the nation’s best.
