The defensive back factory in Iowa City under the tutelage of defensive coordinator Phil Parker is churning like a well-oiled machine. There has been Desmond King, Riley Moss, Cooper DeJean, and many more.
Up next is another Iowa Hawkeyes defensive back primed for a breakout year and meteoric rise to national notoriety. That comes in the form of Sebastian Castro, Iowa’s next great defensive back.
Last year, Castro was an unknown to most of America when the season started. That didn’t last for long. He quickly burst onto the scene and made himself one of the best playmakers on one of America’s best defenses.
His 2024 season is set up to show off his skills even more and Pro Football Focus is heaping the high praises onto Sebastian Castro.

“He is the best slot cornerback by a mile in college football,” said Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus.
Castro, who isn’t the biggest at 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds, plays much larger than his stature. The native of Oak Lawn, Illinois, and Richards High School appeared in all 14 games last year with 13 starts. He was in on 67 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups, 3 interceptions, and one returned for a touchdown.
Castro was a PFF First-Team All-American, Second-Team All-Big Ten, and an Associated Press Third-Team All-American. Ahead of the 2024 season, he has been named an Athlon Sports Fourth-Team All-American and a Second-Team All-Big Ten member by Phil Steele.
