Style points were supposed to be left behind when college football moved on from the BCS era to the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, subjectivity still seems to exist in the college football world.
The Iowa Hawkeyes, who just beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers to finish the year 8-4 overall with a 6-3 record in a power conference, are getting punished despite winning.
The USA TODAY Re-Rank 1-134 slid the Hawkeyes a spot despite their win over the Cornhuskers. That trend continues as the CBS Sports 1-134 College Football Rankings have done the same.
Albeit the win was ugly and improbable, it was still a win and that should be all that matters. Regardless, CBS Sports has dropped the Hawkeyes two spots in their rankings following the conclusion of the regular season.
Iowa dropped from No. 33 down to No. 35 with the win. Unlike USA TODAY, who only dropped Nebraska one spot for the loss, CBS Sports punished the Nebraska Cornhuskers worse than Iowa, as they did lose the game. They dropped six spots down to No. 54 following the loss.
Iowa’s next chance to climb any sort of rankings will come in nearly a month once they get their chance at a bowl game. Where that is, who it is against, and even who will be playing in it remain largely unknown at this time.
One thing that is known, though, is that Iowa is winning and even if it is ugly and costs them a spot in the poll, the tally in the victory column is all that matters.
