Iowa men’s basketball strength and conditioning coach announces retirement

Happy retirement, coach Bill Maxwell!

After a lengthy tenure with the Hawkeyes, director of athletic performance Bill Maxwell has announced his intentions to retire, per a University of Iowa press release Thursday.

Originally hired by Iowa in 1997, Maxwell has served as the men’s basketball program’s strength and conditioning coach for the past 22 years. Maxwell had previously served as a strength coach at Kansas from 1991-97.

Maxwell earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from East Carolina University in 1990 where he played for the Pirates’ football team.

Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery thanked Maxwell’s devotion to the program and athletic department through his tenure at Iowa.

“I want to thank Bill for his dedication to our program and the department for the past 27 years,” McCaffery said. “Bill has had an outstanding career in the strength and conditioning field, and he has been an incredible resource for our players. We all wish Bill the best in his future endeavors.

Taking over Maxwell’s role as strength and conditioning coach for the Iowa men’s basketball program will be Andre McIntyre, who joined Iowa as an assistant under Maxwell in August 2022.

McIntyre received his undergraduate degree in exercise science and applied human sport physiology from Wayne State College, along with a Master of Science in nutrition and exercise science from South Dakota State University. Before his time at Iowa, McIntyre made stops at South Dakota State and Creighton.

The Hawkeyes’ first regular season game will be a 7 p.m. CT tipoff on Nov. 4 from Carver-Hawkeye Arena versus Texas A&M Commerce as part of the Kenny Arnold Classic.
