After a disappointing loss last Sunday at Ohio State, Iowa returns to action today versus Nebraska after nearly a full week off.
The Hawkeyes (18-2, 7-1 Big Ten) led by 12 points over the Buckeyes with 8:55 remaining in regulation in Columbus, but sophomore forward Cotie McMahon came alive for Ohio State. Her performance spurred the Buckeyes on into overtime where they outscored the Hawkeyes 17-9.
McMahon finished with 33 points and 12 rebounds. Graduate guard Jacy Sheldon added another 24 points for Ohio State.
Meanwhile, Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark did her thing, knocking down seven 3-pointers en route to 45 points on the day. Clark added seven assists, but she also had seven turnovers.
Fifth-year guard Molly Davis added 14 points and eight assists on 6-of-7 shooting, while sophomore forward Hannah Stuelke was Iowa’s final double-figure scorer with 10 points and seven rebounds. Stuelke fouled out early in the bonus session, though.
The loss snapped Iowa’s Big Ten-best 15-game winning streak overall and it also snapped the Hawkeyes’ run of 11 consecutive wins over conference foes.
Now, it’s time to turn a new page against Nebraska. The Cornhuskers (13-6, 5-3 Big Ten) enter having lost two of their past three. The Huskers fell at Minnesota on Jan. 14, 62-58, and at Penn State on Sunday, 82-73. In between those games on Jan. 17, Nebraska topped Michigan, 62-43.
