The 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes season was one of many words and adjectives but may be remembered as one overall word: consistent.
Not in the standard way of consistently holding a steady line throughout the entire way. But consistently up and down. If there was one thing you could count on with this team, it was that it was consistently unpredictable. You knew to never get too comfortable and that was a constant.
Iowa did go 10-4 overall and hit double-digit wins this year while seemingly playing with only two out of three units as the offense was barely existent. The way that the season ended did leave a bad taste, though, as the Hawkeyes were shutout in their last two games against Michigan and Tennessee.
The way the season ended has the Hawkeyes sliding down some end-of-the-year rankings. In USA TODAY Sports’ Re-Rank 1-133, Iowa saw one final slide to cap off the 2023 season. Iowa dropped four spots to No. 33 overall.
The Hawkeyes are sandwiched between 11-3 Toledo at No. 32 and 8-5 Utah at No. 34. Despite the slide, Iowa still was the highest-ranked Big Ten West team, although the division is now pushed to the wayside as the new era of the Big Ten gets underway.
