Iowa Hawkeyes headlining heavyweight field for inaugural Women’s Champions Classic

The Iowa Hawkeyes have national staying power. They are headlining next year’s loaded field in the inaugural Women’s Championship Classic.

The Iowa Hawkeyes and their national relevance in women’s college basketball aren’t going anywhere. It is here to stay as shown by the games and invitationals lined up for next season along with the recruits they are landing.

The Hawkeyes get another chance for national exposure early during the 2024-25 season as they are headlining a loaded field at the inaugural Women’s Champions Classic.

Iowa is taking on the Tennessee Volunteers while the UConn Huskies take on the Louisville Cardinals in a field set up for excitement. Games are set for Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024 in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Both games will be part of a doubleheader broadcasted by FOX.

Tickets to the event, which are sure to sell rapidly with the prominence of the four teams in it, go on sale on Thursday, Mar. 21 at 9:00 a.m. CT.

All four teams in the Women’s Champions Classic are playing in this year’s NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes are back as a No. 1 seed for the first time since 1992 while UConn is a No. 3 seed, and Tennessee and Louisville are looking to make deep runs at No. 6 seeds.

The biggest takeaways from this event are that Iowa is proving they are staying relevant nationally after Caitlin Clark not only brought them to prominence now, but is setting them up for sustained success along with clear signs that women’s college basketball is demanding primetime TV slots and events due to the massive success it is seeing right now.
