Iowa Hawkeyes 2023 Snapshot Profile: No. 29 Sebastian Castro

A returning starter at Iowa’s now famed CASH position, what does senior Sebastian Castro have in store for the Hawkeyes in 2023?

Let’s talk about the famed CASH position in Phil Parker’s defense.

There are few positions on the defense that have garnered such a reputation in such a short period of time as this Phil Parker innovation. In just a few years since its implementation, we have seen Amani Hooker and Dane Belton excel in the role and move on to the NFL. Now, senior Sebastian Castro is next in line to try and make an impact from the position.

Is it a true defensive back position, or is it a linebacker? We don’t want to confirm either way, you’ll have to reach out to Phil Parker for that answer, but it is the perfect bridge from the linebackers to the defensive backs in our profile series.

Sebastian Castro has been on the Iowa roster for a while but now has his chance in 2023 to make an impact as a likely full-time starter. With Cooper DeJean’s full-time transition to cornerback and Xavier Nwankpa earning a starting safety role, the great trust of the CASH role will be given to Castro.

Castro is a player generating a ton of buzz within the Iowa fanbase this offseason due to some stellar flashes across seven starts last season. Many have fallen in love with his sure tackling and motor. In the bowl game against Kentucky, he was a flat-out star for the Hawkeyes’ defense with two passes defended and a sack.

Here’s a look at potentially the next Hawkeye defender you should definitely get to know in Sebastian Castro.
