Iowa football hosting transfer portal WR over weekend

Iowa is zeroing in on another transfer portal wide receiver target that it will host this weekend.

Iowa has already added one player out of the transfer portal in former Auburn quarterback Hank Brown.

With Brown joining the Hawkeyes‘ roster, Iowa and offensive coordinator Tim Lester would love to add some weapons for Brown and the rest of Iowa’s quarterbacks to work with.

One name that is emerging as a possibility is former Chattanooga wide receiver Sam Phillips. The 5-foot-9, 185 pound receiver entered the NCAA transfer portal on Dec. 9 and has quickly amassed offers from schools such as Houston, Memphis, North Texas, East Carolina and Tulsa.

In addition to Iowa, Phillips is reportedly drawing interest from Michigan State, Florida State, Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Washington State.

According to 247Sports and HawkeyeInsider’s Sean Bock, Phillips is set to visit the Hawkeyes beginning this Saturday.

Phillips visited East Carolina before visiting the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday.

Phillips reeled in 154 receptions for 2,108 receiving yards with nine touchdowns during his time at Chattanooga. In 2024, Phillips caught 50 passes for 823 yards with three scores.

Phillips was honored as a first-team All-Southern Conference offensive member this past season. The Cartersville, Ga., native was also recognized as a Southern Conference All-Freshman team selection and freshman All-American by Phil Steele during the 2022 college football season.

Prior to signing with Chattanooga, Phillips tallied 122 grabs for 1,589 yards and 13 touchdowns in three varsity seasons at Cartersville High School.

Phillips will have one season of collegiate eligibility remaining.
