The Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0) and the Iowa State Cyclones (1-0) lock horns in their annual battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy on Saturday. Kickoff from Jack Trice Stadium in Ames is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Iowa vs. Iowa State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Hawkeyes scratched out a 24-14 victory over Utah State in the opener, although Iowa never came close to covering the 24-point number as the Under (43.5) cashed. Iowa was actually outgained by USU in total yards  329-284, but the Hawkeyes were plus-1 in the turnover department.

The Cyclones got it done in their opener against FCS Northern Iowa, winning 30-9 as a 7-point favorite as the Under (40) narrowly came through. Like Iowa, the Cyclones were outgained by their opponent, and UNI posted 279 total yards of offense to just 250 for ISU. However, Iowa State was a plus-2 in turnover margin.

Iowa at Iowa State picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 23, Iowa State 16

Moneyline

Iowa (-185) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return, and that’s a little too steep for a road team, especially in a rivalry game.

The Hawkeyes offense looked slightly better last weekend, as QB Cade McNamara tossed 2 TDs in his team debut. Iowa’s offense should continue to jell under the former Michigan signal caller, and the defense for the Hawkeyes is always nasty. Still, this will be a defensive battle which goes to the team which makes fewer mistakes.

PASS.

Against the spread

IOWA -3.5 (-115) is the better play laying the points, although, again, it should be a 1-score game. Iowa was won 6 of the past 7 meetings straight-up, and the edge goes to the Hawkeyes here because they have a slightly more powerful offense this season. The Cyclones were outgained by an FCS foe last week, and their game would have been closer if not for the forced turnovers.

Over/Under

OVER 36.5 (-110) is risky business in an Iowa-Iowa State rivalry game, and we had a total of just 17 points last season in Ames. The Under has cashed in each of the previous 4 meetings, too. Still, I feel we’ll get a little more offense from Iowa than some might think.
