The Indianapolis Colts made somewhat of a shocking move by trading up to the No. 41 pick to select Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor in the 2020 NFL draft.

Quick Hits

  • Taylor was a two-time Doak Walker Award winner (Nation’s best RB) and a three-time All-American.
  • 926 career carries for 6,174 career rushing yards at Wisconsin. He’s sixth on the FBS all-time rushing yards list. Had 50 touchdowns in three seasons.
  • Fumbling issues are prevalent and not well-versed in pass protection.
  • Taylor is Draft Wire’s No. 1 running back in the draft.

Fit with the Colts

Despite having Marlon Mack going over 1,000 yards in 2019, the Colts are bringing in a running back who can carry the load on early downs while possessing an insane blend of size (5’10, 226) and speed (4.39). He’s a perfect fit for the Colts offense as he gets downhill quickly while possessing the breakaway speed to truly burn a defense.

There are worries about fumbling and usage in college, but Taylor is a strong fit for the Colts offense. It will be interesting to see what the Colts do with Marlon Mack, who enters a contract year, but Taylor will be heavily used in the offense early on.

Conclusion

This is somewhat of a luxury pick for the Colts, who didn’t need to take a running back this early. That said, the value on Taylor is incredibly strong and his fit in the offense is fantastic, which makes this solid selection for the Colts on paper.
