Injury update from Chiefs training camp: Tyreek Hill, Alex Okafor leave practice early

Two players returned to practice for Kansas City, but Hill left practice early after pulling up lame.

The Kansas City Chiefs had their fifth padded practice on Wednesday.

Here is the full list of players that didn’t practice today:

  • CB Lavert Hill (Hamstring)
  • DT Chris Jones (Groin)
  • DE Frank Clark (Illness)
  • LT Eric Fisher (Concussion)
  • TE Deon Yelder (Groin)
  • TE Ricky Seals-Jones (Leg)
  • WR Sammy Watkins (Groin)
  • OT Martinas Rankin (PUP)

The big injury news of the day is that star WR Tyreek Hill left practice early after pulling up lame on a reception. He was able to walk off under his own power following the injury. According to The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, Hill spoke with head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder before jogging to the locker room for the remainder of practice. The injury appeared to be to his right leg. Soft tissue injuries seem to be a theme of training camp so far and the Chiefs confirmed a hamstring injury for Hill.

Defensive end Alex Okafor also was injured during practice, the Chiefs called it a calf injury during their media availability. Okafor has been having a good training camp so far, coming off a torn pec that ended his 2019 season early.

There was some good injury news on the depth side of things. Returning to practice in a full capacity were third-year WR Byron Pringle, who previously dealt with a hamstring injury. Also returning was Antonio Hamilton, who had been dealing with a groin injury. With depth concerns at both the receiver and cornerback positions, it’s good for both players to return to practice.

Juan Thornhill continued stretching and doing individual work. It appears he’s still not yet cleared for contact and team drills. Andy Reid said yesterday that they intend to ramp-up Thornhill’s workload as they go.
