Injury update from Chiefs training camp: DT Chris Jones misses practice

There were several new injuries to report during the second day of padded practices at Chiefs training camp.

The Kansas City Chiefs returned to practice on Saturday for the second practice in pads.

The first day of padded practices saw one of the Chiefs’ star defensive players absent with illness. Today, DE Frank Clark returned to practice. It’s good to see one of the defensive leaders make his return to the field after such a brief absence. However, as Clark returned to action several new players didn’t participate in practice due to injury.

In perhaps the most significant injury development, recently extended defensive tackle Chris Jones missed practice. Kansas City Star reporter Herbie Teope noted that Jones was working with the training staff off on the sideline with players like Juan Thornhill and Martinas Rankin who are both on the PUP list.

The Athletic’s Nate Taylor shared the full list of injuries from the Chiefs PR staff:

Jones is dealing with a groin injury. If you’ll recall, Jones dealt with a calf injury late in the 2019 season. This injury appears to be new and unrelated. We’ll see how long it sidelines Jones and if it’s a minor injury.

Other newly-injured players include second-year CB Alex Brown, he’s out with a knee injury. Free-agent CB Antonio Hamilton is dealing with a groin injury. Third-year WR Byron Pringle is dealing with a tweaked hamstring.

In addition to the new injuries, DT Derrick Nnadi was still absent from practice for undisclosed reasons. LB Darius Harris was excused from practice for the second-straight day. TE Deon Yelder was also absent from practice for a second day with what Andy Reid described as “a slight groin strain.”

The team returns to practice on Sunday.
