The NTT IndyCar Series is pushing for something that NASCAR owners have been looking to make permanent. According to Mark Miles, the chief executive officer of IndyCar, the racing series is pushing to have a charter system in place ahead of the 2024 Indianapolis 500. The system would be similar to NASCAR, which has yet to extend its charter agreement.
As of now, it is unclear how this would affect the Indianapolis 500; however, Miles said that IndyCar’s recent proposal came without the guarantee that teams with a charter would be guaranteed a spot in the event. This is a big topic of conversation, as the Indianapolis 500 is the biggest racing event in the world each year.
Traditionally, the 33 fastest drivers were guaranteed a spot in the Indianapolis 500. If this didn’t continue, it would create controversy over the charter system. It seems like IndyCar is heading toward a charter system like NASCAR, but what it looks like is to be determined. Either way, it would be great for the sport and owners alike if this comes to fruition.
