The Indianapolis Colts announced that linebacker EJ Speed has been downgraded to doubtful for Sunday’s Week 7 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.
Speed was originally listed as questionable on Friday’s final injury report.
After playing 100 percent of the defensive snaps in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans, Speed popped up on the Wednesday injury report with a knee injury. After not practicing that day, Speed did seem to be progressing after he returned to practice on Thursday and was a full participant on Friday.
No specifics about the injury have been reported at this time.
Presumably with Speed out, rookie Jaylon Carlies, who has been the Colts third linebacker this season will get the nickel snaps next to Zaire Franklin. Carlies is one of PFF’s highest graded rookies through six weeks.
When the Colts line up in their base 4-3 defense, Segun Olubi will likely be the third linebacker for those 15-20 or so snaps.
Speed is tied for the team lead in solo tackles. In coverage he is allowing 8.8 yards per catch.
Averaging 3.9 yards per rush as a team, the Dolphins haven’t had the same success on the ground this season as they did last, but they still feature an extremely dynamic running back in De’Von Achane who cleared concussion protocol on Friday.
To bolster the linebacker depth, the Colts announced that they’ve elevated Liam Anderson from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
