Inconvenient truth: Oregon could be USC’s biggest ally in Pac-12 championship push

#USC fans aren’t exactly big backers of the Oregon Ducks … but they might have to be this weekend vs UCLA, and maybe beyond Week 8.

We recently had a conversation with Ducks Wire about the Pac-12 championship chase. Utah, by beating USC, got back into the race, but UCLA and Oregon are the two Pac-12 teams with unbeaten records in conference play heading into Week 8.

Here’s what Ducks Wire editor Zachary Neel said about the race. You’ll notice that he is picking Oregon to beat both UCLA and Utah in Autzen Stadium … and that he is picking USC to make the conference title game.

Yes, those two scenarios are closely related.

Here’s Zachary Neel:

How different this now looks with no divisions gate-keeping the championship game, huh?

I think that the same three teams in line for a potential CFP berth — USC, UCLA, Oregon — are the front-runners to get to Vegas, and they all still have to play each other, save USC and Oregon.

My belief is that Oregon will beat UCLA, and though they might struggle with the Utes later in the year, I still think they win that game at home. At this point, my guess for a Pac-12 title game is the matchup that we all were dying for going into the season: Oregon vs USC.
