The good news about Robert Williams III’s meniscus injury? There’s a chance he could return according to Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka. “He has some optimism he can return” before the potential end of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, related the Celtics coach ahead of the team’s road tilt with the Toronto Raptors Monday evening.
The bad news? One way or another, he’ll have to have surgery — and Boston will have to stick around long enough without the Timelord in order for there to be a series for him to return to. With certain surgical options, he might be back in the second or third round pending where the Celtics are seeded and when they start — as well as if they even make it that deep into the postseason without him.
Boston lost Williams to what was called a sprained knee at the time during the second half of the Celtics’ blowout win of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday afternoon, revised to a torn meniscus after the Texas A&M product had an MRI.

“We’ve done it all year and hopefully, he’ll be back sooner than later,” related Udoka of dealing with injuries. “We’ll see in the next few days, but that should give him some hope and optimism to heal up and rely on everybody else to take his spot for now.”
