If the price is right, Rams should take one-year flier on Cam Newton

The Rams still need a backup quarterback and Cam Newton could be a great fit if the price is right.

Playing at well below 100 percent, Cam Newton’s time in Carolina came to an end after a difficult two seasons. The Panthers released the veteran quarterback after nine seasons back in March, parting ways with the former No. 1 overall pick from Auburn.

There still remain several questions that explain why he’s still on the market, as his numbers were discouraging and unimpressive after injuring his shoulder. It might have offered some perspective for teams thinking of adding him, knowing that the veteran quarterback succumbed to foot and shoulder injuries the past two seasons.

At a time when Newton doesn’t hold tons of value—and understandably so—it appears that he will sign with a team as he is still capable of playing at full health. And while he saw a notable drop-off in his arm strength, Newton seems hungry and focused on the process of preparing for what’s next.

Newton was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks of his time, and it stands to reason that a team will be willing to take a chance on him this season. It is, however, fair to question how—or if—he can return to his elite pre-injury form, wherever he ends up.

Instagram videos showing Newton working out and training is certainly a step in the right direction. Images of him in the weight room are surely encouraging signs. But regardless, teams will view him as a player who lost his last eight appearances going back to 2018. Add the fact that he has played just one 16-game season in the last four.

He has taken on all comers, sometimes immaturely and childishly, and yet he’s the best playmaker when he’s in good health. He is motivated by the negative reactions that have been reciprocated by his critics, in large part by those who doubt him. But he remains devoted to his craft, and he’s out to prove he’s a game-changer. And so here’s Newton’s chance to dare to be great.

Newton might have revved up his game, but that’s the opposite of how these organizations view it. He’s ready to show people that he is healthy again and that he can be a reliable, productive option.

Where exactly does he fit in well, in what system, on what team and in what city? New England is the betting favorite that gives him the best shot to start and have success. Or even Jacksonville is a potential landing spot. There’s still reason to believe he will wind up the Rams in Los Angeles, where he could serve as a backup to Jared Goff.

New logo, new uniforms, new quarterback?

Hmm, interesting.

It’s hard to envision a scenario where Newton takes Goff’s spot next season. The fact of the matter is, the Rams fully committed to Goff when they signed him to a four-year, $134 million extension. Even after a year of poor production, there’s no way the Rams can cut ties with Goff. His contract included $110 million guaranteed and will keep him in L.A. through the 2024 season, as they put their trust in him.

With Cam’s mobility, the Rams can utilize him in different formations. And because of McVay’s genius and ingenuity, he can get innovative, as he usually does with his offense. His ability to run effectively can open up the pass game and put everyone in better position to perform at a high level.

The Rams don’t have much cap space – actually, they don’t have any right now, according to Over the Cap – but if Newton is willing to settle for a one-year contract like Jameis Winston did with the Saints, it would be wise for Los Angeles to look into this idea.

There still isn’t a reliable backup on the roster behind Goff after the Rams passed on all the quarterbacks in the draft and free agency, making Newton the best option out there – especially after Andy Dalton landed with the Cowboys.

Goff has never missed a game due to injury, but the Rams are one big hit away from having to start John Wolford at quarterback. That’s not a great situation for a team that needs to bounce back after a disappointing 2019 campaign.

There would obviously be the potential of a quarterback controversy with a high-profile player like Newton behind Goff on the depth chart, but it might also push Goff to improve. However, it’s easy to picture a chorus of chants at SoFi Stadium calling Cam’s name after Goff has a stretch of four poor games.

That being said, the Rams should seriously consider bringing Newton on board to back up Goff next season. Newton, for all his playmaking skills, is going to create success in Sean McVay’s creative offense.
