Nebraska football defensive coordinator Tony White had high praise for safety DeShon Singleton following practice on Tuesday.
Singleton tallied 19 tackles and a pass deflection before he suffered a season-ending injury against Michigan in September. His 2023 season included a seven-tackle effort against Louisiana Tech on September 23. He nicely assumed his role on the defense under first-year defensive coordinator Tony White.
Now, he will be a leader in a safety position with much depth and experience. The senior from Louisiana will be part of a defense that ranked 11th overall in 2023.
White has liked what he’s seen from Singleton in camp so far.
“… I think DeShon Singleton, he’s a guy you can see, you know we lost him last year early, and it was making sure his knee was okay and taking a long process there and all of a sudden now you see him getting back in the groove and making plays and flying around. He’s playing at a high level right now…”
Singleton’s impact is important for a unit looking to continue improving. The defense has a unique mix of new faces and returners, and the Huskers look to have their first winning season since 2016.
Nebraska DC Tony White brought up defensive backs DeShon Singleton and Marques Buford unprompted in his opening comments about the defensive progress this month. Both dealt with injuries last season.
