Hubert Davis reveals what style of play he wants for North Carolina

Running the floor has always been a staple of Tar Heels basketball, but this year, Hubert Davis wants to be faster than fast.

Heading into the season, North Carolina is gearing up for what could be a pivotal year in the future of the program. Over the last couple of years, expectations have been high and let-downs have been low.

North Carolina has historically been a fast-paced team dating back to the days of Dean Smith and Roy Williams in charge. However, Davis is looking to take it to the next level and be the fastest team end-line-to-end-line in the country.

UNC wasn’t even top 50 in the country last season in possessions per game and coach Davis said that will change this upcoming year. He has high expectations and promises for fans of the state of his team going forward.

And Davis wants his team to play faster this season.

“I’ve been straightforward and direct that I want to be the fastest team in the country from free throw line to free throw line,” Davis said. “In order to do that, you have to be in the best shape of your life, and there needs to be a full commitment in regards to how we’re going to play that way. And so if you’re not in the best shape of your life, you’re not going to play. If you don’t sprint to the offensive end, you’re not going to play. If you don’t sprint back defensively, you’re not in the best shape of your life, you’re just not going to play.”

With just under a month until UNC basketball kicks off its season, the team is running sprints, 11-man drills, and practicing getting up and down the floor with pace “unforeseen” to the college basketball world.
