Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) marks its fourth-straight year at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (WRLS) as the official sanctioning body of this week’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the premier historic and vintage motorsports event in North America that begins today.
An experienced HSR team managing race event operations, full technical scrutineering, entry reviews and more once again began its annual two-week visit to WRLS prior to last weekend’s Monterey Pre-Reunion and the third-annual Corkscrew Hillclimb.
The successful Pre-Reunion and Hillclimb weekend was the official opening of Monterey Car Week, but the focus now shifts to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which features over 400 pure historic race cars on track from today, Wednesday, August 14 through Saturday, August 17.
The majority of the returning HSR officials this weekend have worked every Rolex Reunion since HSR took on the sanctioning role in 2021, but this year the proven and experienced team operates under new leadership. Chris Ward took over the position of HSR President early in 2024 from the organization’s leader for more than a decade, David Hinton, who was the main driving force in establishing HSR’s relationship with WRLS at the Reunion events.
“We have long been impressed by the ‘can-do’ professionalism but uncomplicated and efficient work ethic HSR has brought to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion,” said Barry Toepke, Director of Heritage Events at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “This was due in large part to the quiet but effective leadership of David Hinton, but we are delighted to see this approach continue without missing a beat under the equally strong guidance and presence of new HSR President Chris Ward. Once again, our competitors and colleagues working with HSR were delighted with their support and professionalism during last weekend’s Monterey Pre-Reunion and Corkscrew Hillclimb and it will only get better at this weekend’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.”
The biggest event of the overall Monterey Car Week, the Rolex Reunion is open only to entries that, through a vetting process of which HSR is a part, have validated authenticity, race provenance and period-correct compliance.
“From the moment I was asked to take over as President of HSR by David Hinton and IMSA President John Doonan early in the year, an immediate highlight on the calendar was August and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Monterey Pre-Reunion events,” Ward said. “This is the premier historic and vintage motorsports in North America, and it is a point of pride and an honor for HSR to do what we do best for the absolute best event of its type in the United States and beyond and the stellar lineup of authentic historic racing cars and outstanding competitors that only the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion attracts.”
