El Clasico settled nothing between Real Madrid and Barcelona. The first scoreless draw since 2002 leaves the La Liga title race right where it entered the week, in a dead heat. Zinedine Zidane’s side has to be pleased by outplaying Barca for long stretches and getting a point at Camp Nou. A visit from Athletic Bilbao is up next for Los Blancos in their hunt for sole possession of first in the table.

The never-ending carousel of lineups continued on the biggest stage, as Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior both found themselves on the bench in favor of outcasts Gareth Bales and Isco. The moves by Zidane paid off in the form of a valuable point. However, the constant lineup changes just goes to show that the Frenchman still hasn’t settled on a Best XI. Sometimes that can be a good formula to avoid complacency with so many players on the squad having the chance for minutes. Other times, that inconsistency can cause some consternation with the team’s biggest stars.

Injuries haven’t helped matters for Real Madrid. Eden Hazard is the latest to pick up an injury that will keep him out for an undisclosed amount of time. Real Madrid’s marquee signing this summer was just beginning to show signs of his world-class form before going down. This could open the door for the likes of Bale, Vinicius or Rodrygo to claim that spot in the interim and impress their manager.

It’s been a solid start to the season for Athletic Bilbao. Sitting in the seventh spot of the table, there is room for improvement as the team would surely like to claim one of the Europa League spots. Athletic Bilbao will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Eibar in its last league match.
