A surge by power forward Danilo Gallinari and late-game heroics from point guard Chris Paul helped the Thunder force a Game 7.
Paul scored 15 points in the fourth quarter alone and forced two late turnovers by Russell Westbrook, which helped Oklahoma City come back and win. Paul made two late 3s, two free throws to take the 102-100 lead, and then Gallinari made two more free throws to ice the game.
With that, Oklahoma City won Game 6 and staved off elimination — for the time being. They’ll have to do it again Wednesday.
Earlier this series
Houston rolled in Game One, winning 123-108 as James Harden had 37, Eric Gordon had 21 and Jeff Green had 22 off the bench. Gallinari had 29 for Oklahoma City, but Schroder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander combined for just 15 points.
The Thunder made it a contest in Game 2, leading after three quarters. Gilgeous-Alexander bounced back with a 31-point performance, and Dort’s return from injury helped limit Harden to 21 points, well below his average.
But the Rockets took over in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Thunder by 14, and gave Oklahoma City a 111-98 defeat.
The Thunder finally got a win in Game 3, forcing overtime with some final-minute craziness involving turnovers, a potential Steven Adams injury, and a nice Chris Paul pass to Gilgeous-Alexander.
In overtime, Harden fouled out and Oklahoma City outscored the Rockets 15-3 to get the 119-107 win. Four Thunder players scored 20 or more points, and Schroder led the way with 29.
The Thunder tied the series at two games apiece in Game 4 by staving off hot shooting by the Rockets and taking advantage of a Houston shooting slump late to pull off a 117-114 victory. The three primary guards, led by Schroder’s 30 points, combined for 70 for the second game in a row.
Schroder and Paul combined for all 14 Thunder points over the final five minutes to lead the way over the Rockets and James Harden, who finished with 32 points, 15 assists and eight rebounds.
In Game 5, the Thunder failed to score even 20 points in three of the four quarters. Oklahoma City went 7-for-46 from deep. Dennis Schroder, the only Thunder player who was scoring, got ejected in the third quarter.
Houston played off Lu Dort, leading him to shoot and miss too many shots. They played keep-away from Danilo Gallinari, who finished the game with one point and only took five shots. Russell Westbrook played for the first time in the series but only got 24 minutes of time.
Oklahoma City lost 114-80.
