The Washington Wizards will enter play on Aug. 9 as the only winless team in the Orlando bubble. Having fallen 7.5 games behind the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic, the Wizards have officially been eliminated from playoff contention, so at this point, they are merely playing out the string in their final three games.

Still, the NBA is chock full of prideful competitors, so head coach Scott Brooks — who was Billy Donovan’s predecessor in Oklahoma City — may have had some extra incentive for preparing for his former club.

The Thunder are coming off of a loss to the Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies, who also happened to be winless in Orlando before Friday’s contest. Soundly defeated despite opening up an 18-point lead in the game’s first quarter, Chris Paul has implored his team to approach each game with urgency and not let up.

Although the Thunder have already clinched a playoff berth, they are currently jockeying for seeding. It is possible for the club to finish as low at seventh out West, which would likely set up a first-round matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers. So this game does mean something for the club, who would presumably want to avoid that.

Matchups between the two this season

Sunday’s meeting will be the second and final meeting between the Thunder and Wizards this season. The Wizards won the previous contest at Chesapeake Energy Arena by a final score of 97-85. Thomas Bryant led the way for the club with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Injury Report

The Thunder will be without Dennis Schroder (personal reasons) and Andre Roberson (foot soreness).

The Wizards, who have played the restart without All-Star Bradley Beal, will also be without point guard Shabazz Napier.
