It was a big season opener for Rutgers football as the Scarlet Knights beat Temple 61-14 last Saturday. The win certainly created a bit of a stir in college football, with Rutgers receiving votes in the ‘USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll’ as well as the ‘AP Poll.’
Now Rutgers has a chance to prove that the big win over Temple was no fluke with a Saturday game against Syracuse. The Orange looked pretty solid in beating Ohio on the road 29-9 in their season opener last weekend.
This meeting of former Big East rivals is important for both programs. Syracuse head coach Dino Babers underscored this importance during the week when he noted that his program heavily recruits New Jersey.
For Rutgers, this game is essentially a must-win if the Scarlet Knights have bowl ambitions. A 2-0 start would put Rutgers in a promising position to make a bowl game for the first time since 2015.
