How to run and play in a Super Bowl squares pool, everyone’s favorite (and easy!) party game

Need a low-effort pool to make the Super Bowl more exciting?

Super Bowl squares are a time honored betting tradition during the most-watched American sporting event of the year. The pool itself is a total crapshoot, defined only by luck and executed not unlike a particularly ad-filled game of cow pie bingo.

The premise is simple; pay a few bucks, pick a few squares with some random scores attached, and then wait and see if your numbers come up. If nothing else, it’s a way to get the least interested attendees at your Super Bowl party to pay attention to the scoreboard at the end of each quarter. It’s also a welcome conversation topic beyond “wow, did you see that Bud Light ad?” and “hey, you ever notice how Joe Burrow looks like the Home Alone kid?”

Here’s how you play. It’s very, very easy to set up.
