Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer said not to expect a switch to the 3-4 defense or anything drastic, but he did mention that there might be changes to the Vikings defensive alignment. And that’s because Dom Capers has been added to the coaching staff as a senior defensive assistant.
“It might just be changing some of the pressures, coverages and fronts,” Zimmer told reporters.
Capers used to be the defensive coordinator of the Packers, the last time the team won the Super Bowl. He was known for utilizing linebackers in blitz packages and playing a 3-4 defense. Zimmer said that if the team did switch its defensive formation, it would require a personnel change.
“You have to commit to that before free agency and the draft,” Zimmer said.
If these quotes are any indication, it seems like Capers isn’t going to throw out the entire defensive scheme, but rather, add different aspects to the already-existing plan.
