This time last summer break, Scuderia Ferrari was still within striking distance of Red Bull in the constructor’s championship. This year, things have certainly changed.
We’ve hit the Formula 1 summer break in 2023, and the season has certainly been more one-sided than it was in 2022. Red Bull is still atop the standings, and driver Max Verstappen’s charge for historical greatness has the team with 107 more points than they did last year this time — Red Bull is currently sitting at a staggering 503 points, much greater than the 396 they had this time last year. But it’s the next few spots that have shaken up in 2022, and it starts with the Prancing Horse.
Ferrari is no longer competing for wins with drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, and the team has dropped two places from second to fourth and is 123 points back from its total of 314 in 2022. Mercedes bumped up a spot in the constructors, but its 247 points is still lower than its 270 points from last year. The Silver Arrows’ Lewis Hamilton is one of only three drivers in 2023 to score points in every race.

Another one of those drivers is Fernando Alonso, and he’s helped propel Aston Martin to the biggest jump on the grid between the two years. Aston Martin jumped up six places from 2022, and its 196 points is a whopping 177 more than it had this year. The team has somewhat fallen behind in the upgrade battle with Mercedes, but Lawrence Stroll’s team is still likely more than pleased with the progress it has made.
Other big losers so far include Alfa Romeo, AlphaTauri and Alpine, all of whom have dropped two slots or more on the grid. McLaren’s late push on development and Haas’ qualifying runs have allowed both teams to stay where they are from last year to this one. The last riser is Williams, who moved up two spots from the heroic efforts of Thai driver Alex Albon this season.
