How Nicolas Claxton can become one of the best centers in the league

Nicolas Claxton could make the leap to the next level if he works on a few key things this offseason.

The Nets have had to deal with a limited cache of draft picks in recent years, but GM Sean Marks found a second-round gem in 2019 when he selected Nicolas Claxton with the 31st overall pick.

In 2019, Claxton was an incredible force in the G League. He averaged 16.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 1.2 BPG for the Long Island Nets while shooting it at a sensational 66% from the field. What made his presence in the G League more impressive was his 56% shooting from three with about two threes attempted per game. The young big man showed just how high his ceiling is in the early stages of his career.

Recently, the 22-year-old wrapped up his sophomore season showing high hopes again. This time though, he did it while being surrounded by players like Kevin Durant and James Harden. Claxton averaged 6.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG and 1.2 BPG on 62% shooting from the field. After defeating the San Antonio Spurs back in May, Harden compared the young stud to his former teammate Clint Capela. Claxton’s ability to finish around the rim and roll off of screens is what has become a highlight of his game so far.

The only concerning parts of the former Bulldog’s game is his three point shooting and interior defense. Claxton only shot 20% from three with the Nets this season. As you saw earlier, that is far from his absurd 56% shooting from downtown on the Long Island Nets. However, this is nothing to worry about – he’s only 22-years-old, and we know the potential for growth is there with his long-range shooting game. It would be also be a nice touch if he can develop a midrange jumper while adding some more post moves to his arsenal.

In regards to interior defense, Claxton may consider putting on a little more muscle and weight. When guarding players like Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the young big man can struggle. Nevertheless, if he is able to put on the necessary muscle and weight he can hold his own down there.
