Jon Rahm cruised to such a comfortable win at the Memorial Tournament on Sunday that not even an eleventh-hour penalty could derail him.
The Spaniard had a three-shot cushion when he chipped in from behind the 16th green for birdie and upped his advantage to four. But as he soled his club right before the chip, the ball moved and didn’t return to its original spot before Rahm hit his shot. Thus, the two-shot penalty (which he found out about at the end of the round).
Coming down the final holes, Rahm had been up by as many as five. At 9 under, he ended the week three ahead of Ryan Palmer, with Matthew Fitzpatrick another shot back.
With the win, Rahm is project to leapfrog Rory McIlroy for the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.
