How impressed is ESPN with Notre Dame’s quarterback situation?

Are the Irish in good hands?

As the 2023 season approaches, [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] is firmly set at quarterback with Sam Hartman.

Who’s is behind him is the bigger question but that really didn’t matter when ESPN’s David Hale looked at all FBS teams quarterback situations (subscription required). Hale ranked Hartman into this 4A tier, one that he named consistently very good.

As Hale dug a bit deeper into what he expects from Hartman, he questions the talent at wide receiver compared to what the transfer had to work with previously. Hale noted that “in five seasons at Wake Forest, Hartman played with five different receivers who finished with at least 1,000 yards. Notre Dame has had just one 1,000-yard receiver since 2015.”

It’s hard to argue Hale’s point, the Irish receivers have severely underperformed but there was more. He goes on to say that “Hartman could have made Wake’s receivers look a lot better.”

An unnamed ACC coach told him that Hartman is “super accurate” and that he was “as good a passer as we’ve played against.” Pretty high praise.

The best players help their teammates be better and we very well could be seeing that this fall with Hartman and the receiver group.
