How Dolphins can close void in their 2020 Draft picks distribution

The Miami Dolphins’ stockpile of 2020 NFL Draft selections is expansive. With over a dozen total selections and six inside the first 70-overall picks, Miami’s draft class is sure to bring sweeping changes to the starting lineup, including along the team’s offensive line and, ultimately, behind center at the quarterback position. The Dolphins are well angled to tackle needs across many fronts — but the Dolphins’ current slate of picks is not immune to weaknesses.

The glaring deficiency in Miami’s current slate of picks lies in the middle rounds, where the Dolphins hold an early 3rd-round selection and then a late 4th-round selection — with nothing in between. The Dolphins own six picks in the first 70 total selections and zero in the next 70 selections. Miami’s wait from 70 to 141 is a brutal stretch, especially in such a deep NFL Draft class this year.

The good news is that the Dolphins are going to have plenty of options to fill the void. It isn’t likely that Miami will package a bunch of 5th-round picks together leap back into the 3rd round, but the Dolphins aren’t likely to pick at 141 and wait out such a long delay. Instead, look for the Dolphins to combine a few of these Day 3 picks together to incrementally work their way up the board to close the gap.

The Dolphins first two picks on Day 3 (No. 141 & 153) are worth a combined 64 points on the NFL’s trade value chart — which blends to equal the value of the 115th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. By blending 141 with day three picks, Miami can feasibly challenge securing a 7th top-100 pick without touching their future 2021 draft capital. Add in the added value Miami may be able to bring in the way of a trade down as well and there’s no reason why the Dolphins should endure such a steep drought between picks 70 and 141, where they’re currently on the outside looking in.
