How does Texas get back to the Big 12 Championship?

The Longhorns Wire staff discusses what needs to be done for Texas to get back to the Big 12 Championship game.

What does Texas need to do to get back?

Patrick Conn- Coaching Needs to Change

It isn’t as simple as wiping out the staff and starting anew with a completely different staff. The changes could be as simple as removing the offensive line coach Herb Hand, or Tom Herman backing off of offensive game planning and allow his offensive coordinator to coordinate.

Herman can stand up at the podium and proclaim he isn’t calling plays all that he wants, he carries around a playsheet which gives the perception that he still wants control of the offense. One way or another, for the Longhorns, to get over the hump the coaching has to stop being a hindrance to this football team.

Sometimes it is due to coaching mistakes such as clock management or not putting their best players in a position to succeed.

Cami Griffin – Consistency

There’s several different factors that play into this. Although the majority of it falls on the coaching staff, the players have to execute as well. The Longhorns have to find a way to be consistent. At this point, it’s hard to tell which team will show up each week. Texas continues to lose to unranked teams each season which significantly impacts their Big 12 title hopes and College Football Playoff aspirations.

Great teams find a way to win even on their worst days. The Longhorns had the fifth-most talented roster in the country this season and rarely did they look like it. The heartbreaking TCU loss this season painted the perfect picture of the issues within Texas’ football program. Against a team that they should have comfortably defeated, Texas was severely outcoached and their top players committed costly mistakes.

Griffin McVeigh – Move on from the Sam Ehlinger Era

As much of a fan favorite Sam Ehlinger is, his time as the starting quarterback at the University of Texas needs to come to an end. This season was the third season he spent as the full-time starter. We saw little to no progression in his game that would have elevated Texas to a Big 12 champions caliber team.

Hudson Card is sitting there waiting and is ready to explode onto the scene and become a star. Ehlinger will have his final moment as the star in the bowl game and fans will be thankful for his time. However, it is time for a new era.
