How does Texans QB Deshaun Watson deal with blowout losses?

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson doesn’t get involved in many blowout losses, and when he does, he quickly forgets the feeling.

The Chicago Bears embarrassed the Texans 36-7 Sunday afternoon in their Week 14 encounter at Soldier Field. Though Watson was not bad, going 21-of-30 for 219 yards and a touchdown, it wasn’t good enough to stave off the franchise’s ninth-worst loss in team history, playoffs included.

Watson told reporters after the game that once a blowout loss concludes, he is quickly trying to recapture positive thoughts and stay upbeat.

“Honestly, I can’t even tell you because I don’t even be thinking about it,” Watson said.

The Texans have sustained four blowout losses in the course of Watson’s four seasons as a starter. In Week 11 of 2019, they lost 41-7 at the Baltimore Ravens. In Week 14 of 2019, though ending up 38-24, they fell down as far as 38-3 in the third quarter to the Denver Broncos. In that year’s divisional playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 24-0 deficit to thump Houston 51-31. In Week 7 of 2020, the Green Bay Packers prevailed 35-20, leading 35-13 with 2:00 left in the game.

Watson simply forgets the feeling.

Said Watson: “I push it to the back. We had two last year against Denver and Baltimore and the KC game, but no, that’s out the window. I don’t even remember that game. I just let that slide. I’m not trying to even reminisce or think about that feeling. I’m trying to have success and win championships. That’s my mentality.”

The Texans have a shot to play spoiler with the Indianapolis Colts’ postseason hopes as they finish the season series with their AFC South rivals on Sunday in Week 15 at Lucas Oil Stadium. If the Texans win, even amid a losing season, Watson may remember those feelings more than he would if Houston loses big for the second week in a row.
