How college football’s clock-related rule changes will impact the game

Will these new rules have a major impact?

This fall, college football will see something it hasn’t seen in almost 60 years.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel decided for Division I and Division II contests, the clock will not stop after a first down, except in the final two minutes of each half, per multiple reports, including from The Athletic and CBS Sports, on Friday. The new rules will begin in the 2023 season, and Division III games are not impacted.

The clock stoppage was one of three rules approved by the rules committee as the group aims to cut down on the numbers of plays per game. New rule changes also include not allowing consecutive timeouts by one team and the removal of untimed downs from the end of the first and third quarters.

The no consecutive timeouts and no untimed downs make sense, but questions remain as to the impact these changes will have.
