How 1 bettor’s near-$20k payout was almost ruined by a late Devin Booker 3-point attempt

Breaking down how one bettor won big on Friday night.

To the casual viewer, there wasn’t much exciting about Friday night’s matchup between the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers outside of a little sideline mix-up between teammates Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard in the second quarter. Phoenix held a 13-point lead after one half of play, extended it to as many as 32 points down the stretch of the third quarter and led by 27 heading into the final frame. However, the last 12 minutes of what was supposed to be garbage time turned into a wild ride for one bettor who had a same game parlay (SGP) in the works.

The parlay, which had only checked four of 10 boxes to that point, was in jeopardy of falling apart due to the lopsided score. A few early-quarter Suns haymakers might have put the nail in the coffin as the Lakers surely would have thrown in the towel, sending their superstars to the bench for the duration of the game while Phoenix’s main guys rested. Instead, Phoenix went cold, and L.A. got hot and trimmed the Suns’ lead to 20 with Davis, LeBron James, and Carmelo Anthony checking off a few of the SGP boxes along the way.

Monty Williams eventually re-called the Suns’ starting unit as his team’s lead continued to dwindle, and this is where things began to get real. Now just two Anthony Davis points, two made Russell Westbrook threes, and one made Devin Booker three-pointer away from nearly $20 thousand, the last few minutes of gameplay would become a journey.

Davis scored his 20th point with 3:33 remaining, and Westbrook air-balled his only three-point attempt of the fourth quarter, leaving the fate of the bettor’s potential payout in the hands of Devin Booker. So you can only imagine the anxiety that ensued when Booker found himself wide open from behind the line with just under three minutes to play.

Alas, Booker missed the shot and did not attempt another one over the final two minutes and change, leaving one lucky guy with a payout of $19,837.65.
