Hornets to hire Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson as head coach

Charlotte has found their new leading man on the sidelines.

The Charlotte Hornets’ coaching search has finally come to an end.

First reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Hornets has agreed to a deal with Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson to become their next head coach.

Atkinson met with Hornets officials, including owner Michael Jordan, on Wednesday for the third time prior to coming to an agreement.

The agreement is a four-year deal, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Along with Atkinson, former two-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike D’Antoni was among the final two candidates for the position.

Atkinson is currently coaching in the NBA Finals with the Golden State Warriors. Prior to his first season with the Warriors, Atkinson spent last season with the Los Angeles Clippers as an assistant after his four-year stint as the Brooklyn Nets’ head coach ended in 2020.
