Hope Solo pleads guilty to DWI, receives suspended sentence

Solo released a statement after admitting to a DWI charge in North Carolina

Former U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper Hope Solo on Monday pleaded guilty to driving while impaired, while charges of misdemeanor child abuse and resisting a public officer were dismissed.

A judge in Forsyth County, North Carolina gave Solo a suspended two-year sentence plus a 30-day sentence. Solo will not serve that latter time, having been credited for spending 30 days at an in-patient rehabilitation facility. She was fined $2,500 and ordered to pay $600 to cover the lab tests for the blood sample, and must undergo a substance abuse assessment.

According to a police report, on March 31 Solo was found asleep at the wheel in a parking lot in Winston-Salem, N.C., with her two-year-old twins in the vehicle with her. The report says that Solo refused a breathalyzer test, so police acquired a search warrant to draw a blood sample that showed blood-alcohol levels three times the legal limit in North Carolina, as well as THC.

Solo’s statement

Solo posted a statement on social media Monday night, referring to the incident as “Easily the worst mistake of my life,” and adding that she had “underestimated what a destructive part of my life alcohol had become.”

“I look forward to opening up and sharing more with everyone in the coming weeks,” added Solo.

Solo was due to be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame earlier this year, but in April publicly requested that her induction ceremony be moved to 2023 while she completed her in-patient treatment.
